The Honorable Adelaide “Alex” Sink
Alex Sink was raised on Hollyview Farm and graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1966. She is the great-granddaughter of Chang and Adelaide Bunker, renowned Siamese Twins. She was brought up in their original home, which she still co-owns with her sister Dottie.
Following her passion for mathematics, Sink earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wake Forest University. After graduation, she embarked on a teaching journey in West Africa, where she shared her knowledge in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Congo.
In 1974, Sink embarked on a distinguished 26-year banking career with NCNB/NationsBank/Bank of America. Her work brought her to various locations including Charlotte, NC, New York City, NY, and multiple cities across Florida – Miami, Tampa, and Jacksonville.
Upon early retirement from Bank of America, Alex’s dedication to public service led her to politics. She was elected as the in 2007. In 2010, she ran for the position of Governor of Florida, and was narrowly defeated in a very close election.
Alex’s commitment to community and advocacy extends beyond her professional endeavors. She has played pivotal roles in various nonprofit organizations such as Wake Forest, United Way, Junior Achievement, and Tampa Bay Wave, a startup tech incubator. Notably, she founded Ruth’s List Florida, an organization focused on recruiting, training, and electing pro-choice Democratic women at various governmental levels. Her nonprofit work has earned her numerous accolades over the years.
Alex was married to the late Bill McBride and is a proud mother of two adult children and grandmother to four grandchildren.
